Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, has distributed food items to Christian widows and other vulnerable residents across the state ahead of the Christmas celebrations.
More than 6,000 people benefited from the initiative, including 1,605 internally displaced persons, each of whom received a bag of rice, a carton of spaghetti and a gallon of cooking oil.
The distribution, held on Monday, is part of a policy the governor has sustained since assuming office in 2019.
Each year, Zulum approves Christmas support packages for the Christian community, alongside free transport for non-indigene Christians resident in Borno to travel to their ancestral homes for the festivities.
The initiative is aimed at easing economic pressure on disadvantaged residents and ensuring that they can celebrate Christmas with dignity and a sense of inclusion.
While supervising the exercise, Zulum stressed the importance of peace, unity and shared prosperity among all residents of the state, regardless of religious or ethnic background.
“It is my sincere hope that the long-standing relationship between Muslims and Christians in Borno State will continue to thrive. I pray that Almighty Allah, in His infinite mercy, will bless our communities and ensure peaceful coexistence between the two religions,” he said.
He added that both Islam and Christianity promote tolerance and peaceful coexistence, noting that mutual respect remains essential to sustaining harmony in the state.
The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Borno State, Most Rev. John Bogna Bakeni, expressed appreciation for the governor’s continued support and inclusiveness.
“This gesture means a great deal to the Christian community in Borno State. Your Excellency has once again demonstrated empathy and a commitment to inclusion, giving our people renewed hope and a reason to celebrate Christmas,” he said.
