It was a heartbreaking scene today as family, friends, and well-wishers gathered to say their final goodbyes to Dozie Okoye and Joan Gusiora, the young couple whose dreams were tragically cut short in the Otedola Bridge fire recently.
Dozie, a banker at Zenith Bank’s Ladipo branch in Lagos, and Joan, a devoted nurse with a promising career in the United States, had their whole lives ahead of them. But in a cruel twist of fate, their journey together ended in an inferno that claimed their lives too soon.
Dozie and his wife died when a 30-tonne gas truck exploded following a brake failure near the Otedola Bridge on March 11, 2025. Reports indicate that Dozie had just resumed work that day after his annual vacation. He had picked up his wife, and they were on their way home that evening when they were caught in the explosion that consumed lives and properties in the vicinity.
At their burial today, tears flowed freely as loved ones struggled to come to terms with their loss. Their story was one of love, ambition, and hope—a love that was meant to last a lifetime but was instead consumed by tragedy.
As the earth closed over their final resting place, mourners held onto memories of the vibrant couple whose warmth and kindness had touched so many.
