Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has urged security agencies to implement effective strategies to safeguard lives and property during the festive season.

The governor made this appeal while receiving the newly appointed Commissioner of Police for Ogun State, Mr. Lanre Ogunlowo, who paid him a courtesy visit at his office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Commending security agencies for maintaining peace in the state, Abiodun highlighted the potential for criminal activities to escalate during the Christmas period and called for proactive measures to prevent security breaches.

“As we approach the yuletide period, we all know it comes with its challenges. Those driven by nefarious motives or get-rich-quick schemes may become desperate. I urge you to design and implement strategies that will ensure a peaceful celebration, allowing everyone to enjoy the season without fear of lawlessness,” Abiodun said.

The governor emphasized collaboration among security agencies, urging them to work with the same unity shown to Ogunlowo’s predecessor. “Together, we can continue to build the Ogun State of our dreams,” he added.

Abiodun also noted the unique challenges Ogun faces due to its geographical location, bordering four states and an international boundary. He explained that this has led to an influx of people, increasing the government’s security responsibilities.

The governor detailed efforts his administration has made to enhance security, including reinvigorating the State Security Trust Fund to provide modern equipment and logistics for law enforcement. This, he said, had contributed to Ogun’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s most peaceful states.

“Security is key to socio-economic development. Without safety, investments won’t flow, and economic activities will stall. You can build all the infrastructure, but if there’s a perception of insecurity, no one will come,” Abiodun said.

Addressing the prevalent issue of cultism in some parts of Ogun, the governor urged the new CP to work closely with other agencies to find a lasting solution. He also commended the Inspector General of Police for appointing an experienced and well-trained officer, describing Ogunlowo’s deployment as strategic for maintaining peace.

“We appreciate the Inspector General of Police for entrusting Ogun with a competent officer like you. Rest assured, our administration will continue to support the police and other security agencies to ensure peace across the state,” he said.

In his response, CP Lanre Ogunlowo assured the governor of his commitment to enhancing the state’s security framework. He pledged to build on existing structures with the support of the state government, other security agencies, and additional resources, including Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) provided by the Inspector General of Police.

“I understand the security challenges in Ogun, especially cultism. My team is ready to implement strategies to address these issues, particularly during this festive period,” Ogunlowo said.

He called on residents to cooperate with security agencies, urging them to respect others’ rights and enjoy a peaceful celebration.

“Criminals should steer clear; we will be on the ground to ensure safety,” he said.
