One-time Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ife (Obafemi Awolowo University), Prof Wande Abimbola, told a world audience today that the Yoruba race is the largest single ethnic group in Nigeria with over 42 million in Nigeria, followed by the Hausa/Fulani race and the Ibo people going by recent authentic censors figure.
He disclosed this while fielding questions during a Zoom engagement hosted in Brazil with participants from countries around the world, including Canada, UK, and the United States.
He retraced the political history of Nigeria and how the Yoruba race was relegated to the background when the British granted independence.
He spoke about the Yoruba culture and religion, and what former President Olusegun Obasanjo contributed to the struggle of the people. He urged the Yoruba people to continue to uplift the culture and tradition, as he delved into the significance of Ifa and prayed that the Yoruba nation is realized in his lifetime.
