Two persons have been reportedly stabbed as South Africans residing in eastern Johannesburg marched in the area today demanding that foreign nationals leave their country.
The President, Nigerian Union South Africa, Adetola Olubajo, confirmed the latest development.
He however could not confirm the nationalities of the victims as the police had yet to reveal their identities.
Olubajo stated: “It’s confirmed that two people were stabbed at a ‘taxi rank’ and Jeppe Road in Johannesburg Central Business District and we have informed the Consul-General of Nigeria in Johannesburg and the police in Jeppestown.
“I’m not sure (of their nationalities) as the police have taken them to hospital. Their identities were not disclosed. The police are using rubber bullets to disperse them.
According to SowetanLive, the protesters live in hostels around that part of town and had gathered for an address by the former leader of the Inkatha Freedom Party, Mangosuthu Buthelezi.
However, they walked the street to the venue of the talk armed and chanting, “foreigners must go back to where they came from.”
The fresh wave of violence has reportedly spread to other areas in Gauteng province.
