Woman Kills Child She Couldn’t Feed, Police

Segun Atanda/

A 40-year-old woman, Foluke Owolewa, who once attempted to kill one of her children by throwing her into a septic tank, has been arrested for killing another child, moments after she gave birth to her.
The suspect, who lives at 17, Ilupeju Street, Anisere Unity Estate, in Ipamesan area of Sango, Ogun State, allegedly killed the infant to save her family the burden of feeding another mouth.
Police said the incident, which occurred on Wednesday, was reported at the Sango-Ota police division by concerned residents, after they discovered what the suspect had done to her baby.
Spokesman for the police in Ogun State, ASP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the suspect confessed to the crime during interrogation.
According to Oyeyemi, the suspect said she resolved to kill the infant, because the family could not cope with the burden of another child.
She said her husband had been struggling to take care of their two daughters and clearly had no means of taking care of a third child.
Police said investigations further revealed that the suspect had also attempted to kill one of her surviving daughters, by dumping her in a septic tank, while she too was a day old.
The child was, however, lucky to have been rescued by neighbours, who got wind of what she had done.
It is not yet known how the suspect killed her latest child.
But that may not take long to know, as Oyeyemi said the suspect had been moved to the homicide section of the state criminal investigations department, in Abeokuta, for further interrogation.
Oyeyemi enjoined the public to pay close attention to events around them and promptly report anything unusual to the police.
