A woman, identified as Maryam Muhammad, has been arrested following allegations that she set her co-wife and two children ablaze during a late-night domestic incident in the Hotoro area of Kano metropolis.

The incident reportedly occurred on Monday night in the Mai Allo area of Hotoro quarters and has left residents of the community in shock.

According to reports, the suspect allegedly poured petrol on her co-wife, 28-year-old Firdausi Musa, and two young children before setting them on fire inside the family residence.

The children, identified as seven-year-old Khadija Ya’u and three-year-old Ismail Ya’u, reportedly sustained serious burns alongside their mother.

The victims are currently receiving treatment at different medical facilities in Kano.

Firdausi Musa is said to be undergoing treatment at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Dala, while the children are receiving medical attention at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital.

Their father, Malam Saminu, who reportedly suffered burns while attempting to rescue them from the fire, is also receiving treatment.

According to Daily Trust, Firdausi’s younger brother, Buhari Musa Sa’ad, said the family received a distress call at about 3am informing them that his sister, her husband and the two children had been attacked.

Sa’ad disclosed that Firdausi had spent less than two weeks in the matrimonial home before the incident occurred.

“She is around 28 years old. The children who got burned are the ones she brought with her from her previous marriage. They are stepchildren to the husband, who works as a tricycle rider,” he reportedly said.

Residents in the area were said to have rushed to the scene after hearing cries for help, while the suspect was subsequently taken into custody at the Mariri Police Division.

As of the time of filing this report, the Kano State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
