“The role of safety professionals in the workplace cannot be overstated, as the cost of ignoring hazards can be immense.” says Engr. Olalekan Badmus, the Executive Director of Marine and Operations at the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA).
According to Engr. Badmus, “Safety professionals are the heart of any organization.”
Engr. Badmus made this statement upon receiving the Safety Ambassador Award Plague from the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON) Osun Branch. The award was given during the official inauguration of the ISPON Osun State branch.
The award, which recognizes individuals for their outstanding commitment to promoting safety, was presented to Engr. Badmus at his NPA office by Osun Safety executive and Fellow of the Institute, Mr. Gbenga Oso, accompanied by ISPON media consultant Ronke Kehinde and Taiwo Folorunsho, an innovative safety professional.
Speaking during the award plaque presentation, Engr. Badmus emphasized that safety is foundational at NPA.
“At the Nigerian Ports Authority, safety is not just a policy — it is a principle that drives every aspect of our operation. Hazards, if unchecked, can lead to ecosystem damage, increase operational costs, and endanger lives. That’s why we take safety seriously at every level,” he said.

Engr. Badmus also highlighted his personal commitment to safety, noting his recent certification as a professional safety specialist.
“Recently I completed a rigorous one-week safety refresher course. It involved daily assignments and a final exam to qualify for certification. This training deepened my appreciation for the responsibilities safety professionals shoulder every day.”
He explained that the NPA has implemented Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) aligned with best safety practices, including CPR training, hazard prevention measures, and emergency protocols.
“We ensure that these standards are not just policies on paper but are enforced throughout our operations. Initiatives like International Fire Day are actively promoted within the organization to recognize and encourage safety officers,” he added
On how he plans to advance safety advocacy nationwide, Engr. Badmus said:
“The journey begins from where you are. You must promote safety in your immediate environment before you can influence the larger community. I intend to support safety awareness programs, encourage the recognition of safety officers, and collaborate with stakeholders to expand the conversation, also at Osun Branch of ISPON.”
He commended the National Assembly’s Safety Regulations and Standards Committee for their efforts in promoting safety legislation and oversight.
“Their inspections and engagement have improved our practices, and I believe more organizations should be required to have ISPON-certified professionals in key roles.”
To young professionals, Engr. Badmus offered this advice:
“Understand your value. You are central to the functioning and wellbeing of any workplace. During my course, we studied the economic impact of safety. The cost of an accident far outweighs the cost of prevention. That alone underscores your importance.
“Stay committed to upholding standards and continue advocating for a culture of safety in everything you do.”
