Why I Rejoiced over My Father’s Death on Facebook, 26-year-old Corps Member Opens Up

Malik Yahya/

A 26-year-old youth corps member who celebrated his father’s death on Facebook last Friday has exclusively revealed the reasons for his action to NewsmakersNG.
The post in which the angry young man rejoiced over his father’s death, whom he referred to as a “useless man and great devil” has been attracting a lot of reactions since the screenshot was published by an online news medium, instablog9ja.
The post, which he had since deleted, reads: “Friday is for CDS….#Abjcoppa….And finally, the great devil died last night….. R.I.P my useless father…..Just so happy we all saw ur death…. This is GOODNEWS.”

The 26-year-old, who preferred to be known only by his first name, Victor, also said he had no regrets for his actions even after his friends prevailed on him to delete the post.
The Amaraku, Isiala Mbano, Imo State native told NewsmakersNG in an exclusive chat that nothing pleased him more than the death of his father, whose first name he gave as Moses.
He claimed that his father once cursed him that he (Victor) would die prematurely.
Victor said his late father deprived him of fatherly love and never wished him well since he and his mother separated 26 years ago, despite the fact that neither of them remarried.
He said, “I can’t paint him white when I’m dying inside me. He always laughed and told me I would suffer and die before him. But the reverse is now the case… He wasn’t God.
“He deprived me of fatherly love… And still didn’t wish me well. So his death was a great relief to the family… I’m not regretting anything. My friends asked me to delete the post. But I don’t regret posting it.
“Now I wonder the kind of tribute the children will write for him and what people will know him for other than evil. I just pity him, because even at gunpoint I’ll never agree that he had an atom of love for me.
“He cursed me every time he saw me. We never had a loving time as father and son. I’m not fabricating stories. I’m telling you the truth. Don’t know why he hated me so much.
“Before now, anytime I met new friends I told them my dad was late so that they wouldn’t bring up topics about him. I always talked about my mum. So, when they saw my post about him, they were surprised I had a dad all the while. Even friends from secondary school.”
Victor who has three older siblings, two brothers and a sister, was full of praise for his mum, Joy, whom he said gave up everything else to ensure that he and his siblings succeeded.
He said: “I believe in the strength of thorough womanhood from my mum. I thought about how life would have been if my mother wasn’t hardworking and industrious. What if my mum had hooked up with another man after their separation. What would I have done?”
Victor claimed his late father did not attend the wedding of any of his older siblings and never wished any of them well.
“He didn’t attend his children’s wedding or even wished them well. Rather, he rained curses on them, just to frustrate them. Does such a man deserve to be given a befitting burial? He was heartless and never believed he would die soon.”
Victor vowed not to attend his father’s burial ceremony.
“I don’t have that kind of time to spare and can’t take the risk for such an evil man. When I am not mad,” he said.
He also shared with NewsmakersNG screenshot of a WhatsApp message from an uncle, named Murphy, in which he warned Victor and his siblings and their mother against attending his father’s burial, while repeatedly referring to the deceased as evil.
According to him, the mum, who is in her early 60s, lives in Calabar, Cross River State.
Victor said he hoped the treatment he gave his father would serve as a lesson to parents not to transfer the hatred they might have for their spouses to the children.
“Just trying to encourage my peers that if they hate any lass, they shouldn’t transfer their hatred to the children. Too bad that parents do so with belief that certainly the child will forgive them later in life, even after punishing such a child emotionally,” he said.
Asked if he knew the reason his parents separated, Victor said: “Got tired of asking, never been given a genuine explanation.”
