Why I Did Not Visit Scene of Ijegun Pipeline Fire – Sanwo-Olu

Ololade Adeyanju/

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has explained why he did not visit the scene of the Ijegun pipeline explosion, which has so far claimed 13 lives.

Speaking today during a visit to the hospital where some of the victims are receiving treatment the governor said the fact that the site of the explosion was a crime scene prevented he and his deputy from visiting.

He said: “My deputy and I did not visit the site of the incident, because we didn’t want to make a camera show at the scene.

“This is not because we don’t have empathy or we are not doing what is required of us.

“It is a crime scene and security operatives are at the site for investigation. We don’t want to disrupt that process.”

The governor noted that the issue of pipeline vandalism is a criminal issue being dealt with by the Federal Government.

He also disclosed that the government had resolved to foot the bills of the survivors who are receiving treatment at the state’s medical facilities in Ikeja and Gbagada.

Ten more persons were confirmed dead following the pipeline explosion in the Ijegun area of Lagos State Government Thursday, July 4.

The victims died due to severe and high degree burns suffered from the inferno.

Out of the 22 victims rescued by the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), nine were taken to LASUTH, while 12 others were taken to Trauma and Burns Unit of Gbagada General Hospital and one to Alimosho General Hospital.
