The World Health Organisation has certified Nigeria a polio-free country, after three consecutive years of not recording any outbreak.

The world health body disclosed this on Twitter via @WHONigeria yesterday.

At the moment, the disease is endemic in only two countries – Afghanistan and Pakistan, a development that has brought the world one major step closer to achieving the goal of ending polio.

The process of certification which commenced a few months ago culminated in the complete documentation yesterday by the officials of the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency and was accepted by the World Health Organisation team.

The tweet reads, “Today, Nigeria’s complete documentation for #WildPoliovirus free status was accepted by the Africa Regional Certification Commission for polio eradication (ARCC).

“It is a historic day for Nigeria, Africa and the Global Polio Programme!”
