Terrified passengers aboard an Air Peace flight from Lagos to Port Harcourt were thrown into panic on Friday morning after severe turbulence and an aborted landing attempt triggered emotional scenes inside the aircraft.
Videos recorded by passengers showed frightened travellers crying, praying loudly and calling on God for protection as the aircraft shook violently during its approach to Port Harcourt.
In one of the clips circulating on social media, distressed voices can be heard pleading with the crew to abandon the landing attempt.
“We’re not going again, please turn back. Blood of Jesus. Jesus help us,” one passenger repeatedly shouted as others joined in prayers and cries.
The aircraft, operating Air Peace flight P47190, had departed Lagos at about 6.40am for Port Harcourt, a route regularly served by the airline.
Flight schedule records confirm that P47190 is a morning service connecting Lagos and Port Harcourt.
According to a passenger who later recounted the experience online, the flight encountered conditions that prevented it from landing safely in Port Harcourt and was forced to return to Lagos.
“Today, on Air Peace flight P47190, 6:40 AM flight en route to Port Harcourt from Lagos, we escaped what would have been a fatal plane crash.
“We couldn’t land in Port Harcourt, we are back to Lagos.
“This is the most horrific flight experience I have had in my years of flying.
“I have cried twice already. Once I am stable, I will write about what happened.
“Dear Lord, thanks for another chance to live,” the passenger wrote.
Although passengers described the ordeal as terrifying, there was no immediate indication that the aircraft suffered any technical failure.
Aviation experts note that pilots routinely abandon landing attempts or divert flights when weather conditions, visibility, wind conditions or other operational safety concerns make landing unsafe.
The dramatic footage nevertheless captured the raw fear inside the cabin as passengers braced for what many believed could become a disaster. Some were seen clutching their seats, while others prayed audibly as the aircraft manoeuvred through turbulent conditions before eventually heading back to Lagos.
As of the time of filing this report, neither Air Peace nor the relevant aviation authorities had issued an official statement explaining the circumstances that forced the aircraft to abandon its landing attempt in Port Harcourt.
All passengers and crew members were, however, reported safe after the aircraft returned to Lagos, bringing a frightening morning journey to a safe conclusion.
