The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has clarified that it does not offer resit exams for candidates in Nigeria.
This announcement was made via the council’s official X account while responding to inquiries about examination options for candidates with outstanding results.
In a series of posts, WAEC emphasised that candidates who wish to retake the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) must register for the Private Candidate (PC1) 2025 edition. This is the first series of exams designed for private candidates and offers an opportunity to complete or improve their results.
“There is no resit exam for WASSCE in Nigeria,” WAEC stated unequivocally.
Instead, candidates with unresolved or pending results have been advised to re-register for the PC1 examination. Registration for WASSCE (PC1) 2025 began on October 9, 2024, and will close on January 8, 2025.
WAEC provided clear guidance on the registration process. Prospective candidates can register through its online platform by visiting the dedicated registration portal at www.waeconline.org.ng.
The council stressed the importance of adhering to the registration deadline, as late entries may not be accommodated.
In response to a query about the status of “outstanding results,” WAEC explained that this term refers to results withheld temporarily due to errors or issues during the examination or result processing. These cases are often resolved through further verification, but candidates still awaiting their results should not expect a separate resit examination.
The clarification has sparked discussions among students and parents, with many expressing concerns about the lack of a dedicated resit option.
However, WAEC reassured candidates of its commitment to resolving outstanding results and urged them to take advantage of the PC1 registration as a proactive measure.
Candidates who have inquiries about their results or registration process are encouraged to contact WAEC through their official channels for assistance.
