The Chairman of Kuje Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory, Samuel Danjuma Shekwolo, has told residents who do not support the All Progressives Congress (APC) to leave the council ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Shekwolo made the statement in a video circulating on social media on Tuesday while addressing followers and constituents.
The council chairman said his position was based on what he described as the development projects being carried out by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, in Kuje.
He said residents should not benefit from the administration’s interventions and then vote against the APC in the 2027 elections.
“I have said in my area council, it’s either you are doing APC or leave the area council; I’m not hiding that. With confidence, I’m saying it.
“You know why, I cannot have President and Minister doing what they are doing and on the day of election, you will want to match me. It’s either you are with us, or you are out,” he said.
Amnesty International has condemned the statement, describing the threat to remove residents who do not support or vote for the APC as a call to violence and an attack on freedom of association and personal liberty.
In a statement, Amnesty International said no one had the right to make residence in any part of Nigeria conditional on membership of or support for a political party.
The organisation called on the police and other security agencies to immediately prevent any attempt to use violence against residents because of their political choices.
Amnesty International also described Shekwolo as “a danger to society” and called for him to be held accountable over what it said were threats of violence against people who may not support the APC.
The organisation warned that any plan to unleash violence on residents over their political choices could put lives at risk and urged that citizens’ right to choose their preferred political party be respected and protected.
Shekwolo was elected chairman of Kuje Area Council on the APC platform in the February 2026 FCT Area Council election, securing 17,269 votes, according to results announced by the returning officer.
