Video: South African Police Minister Justifies Xenophobic Attacks, Accuses Foreigners of Economic Sabotage

Ololade Adeyanju/

A viral video has shown the Deputy Police Minister of South Africa, Bongani Mkongi, giving justifications for the fresh wave of xenophobic attacks in the country.

The latest attacks appear to target businesses owned mainly by Nigerians.

The Nigerian Government has consequently expressed dissatisfaction with the manner its South African counterpart is handling the situation, which suggests the possibility of complicity between the police and the perpetrators of the attacks.

In the video, the 48-year-old minister decried a situation where foreigners own 80 percent of commercial ventures in South Africa.

He argued that the South African economy was facing an imminent threat of being taken over by these foreigners if the trend was allowed to continue.

He warned his compatriots that a time would come when foreigners would control a larger chunk of the the country’s economy and therefore be in a position to hijack political power.

Mkongi went further to accuse the foreigners of economic sabotage.
