An online video has revealed the probably cause of yesterday’s explosion at Abule Ado, in Amuwo Ododin local government area of Lagos State, which killed 18 people and injured no fewer than 100 others.
Among the dead were the administrator of Bethlehem High School, run by the Catholic Church, Revd. Sister Henrietta Alokha, and a couple and their two children.
The explosion also destroyed over 100 buildings and vehicles in the area.
The video shared by a Twitter user shows what appears like a gas leakage in the area before the explosion occurred.
The residents however appear unperturbed by the development as they are seen carrying on with their activities.
While speaking on the probably cause of the explosion during a visit to the scene yesterday, Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mele Kyari, suggested that it was due to gas leakage.
Kyari stated: “Departing explosion site. Explosions caused by spark that ignited fire from extensively charged atmosphere that emanated from gas cylinder leakages. NNPC pipeline also impacted and ignited. Fire being contained by combined efforts of NNPC, LASG NN and FFS.”
Kyari also revealed today in a tweet via his verified handle, @MKKyari, that the petroleum pipeline fire caused by the explosion was reignited early this morning but had been brought under control.
He tweeted: “Lagos explosion update: NNPC pipeline fire reignited at 5.10am by residual fires in the neigborhood. Combined team of NNPC, NN, LASG and FFS have effectively controlled the fire and steps taken to forestall any reignition. MD NPSC onsite with Gov of Lagos for reassessment.”
