Residents of Iworoko Ekiti have expressed their anguish by destroying the branded bags of rice being conveyed by a trailer that crushed more 20 people to death in the town yesterday night.

The bags of rice were reportedly branded in the name of Senator Tayo Alasoadura, the senator representing Ondo Central who who is re-contesting the seat in this year’s general elections.

The truck which was coming from Ifaki Ekiti, heading for Ado Ekiti reportedly suffered a break-failure and crashed into a roadside market, crushing everyone and everything in its path.

Reports say the trailer first crushed a loaded mini commuter bus dropping off passengers before running over some children hawking food by the roadside and thereafter crashed into the fully packed market.

The truck also crashed into buildings located behind the market including a barber shop and a pharmacy.

NewsmakersNG learnt that about 20 bodies had been recovered from the site of the accident that has been described as the worst ever in the area.

Meanwhile, the state government has promised to offset the cost of treatment of the survivors.

The deputy governor, Bisi Egbeyemi, disclosed this when he visited them at the state’s Specialist Hospital in Ado Ekiti today.
