Video: Policeman Says God Supports Robbery as He Extorts Bribe to Pass Suspected Criminals

Matilda Omonaiye/

A video showing a policeman who appeared to be encouraging some suspected criminals at a check point on the Lagos-Badagry expressway by saying that God approves of armed robbery and car snatching while soliciting bribe from them has gone viral.

The video showed members of a police team accosting men in a car, which appeared to have either been stolen or smuggled, with one of the policemen engaging the occupants of the vehicle.

The policeman, a sergeant, could be heard insisting on collecting a particular amount from the driver, who complained about having already parted with so much bribe along that route on that single journey.

In a bid to persuade the driver, the policeman could be heard hailing him in the Yoruba language: “You are a correct guy. To rob and steal vehicles is a valid vocation approved by even God. But as you know, we too have our duties to perform. You must add to the money because they are four of us on duty here.”

The policemen could then be seen taking some money from the driver, whose face was not shown, then he allowed them to continue on their journey.
