Reports of gunshots caused panic at the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night, prompting the swift evacuation of US President Donald Trump by the Secret Service as security agencies responded to the incident.

The disturbance occurred at the Washington Hilton, where hundreds of journalists, government officials and invited guests had gathered for the high-profile event.

Witnesses reported hearing what sounded like gunfire near a security screening area, triggering immediate emergency protocols and sending attendees diving for cover.

According to officials, Secret Service agents quickly moved the president, the First Lady and other senior figures to safety, while armed teams secured the venue.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation confirmed that its Washington Field Office deployed its National Capital Response Squad to the scene, adding that a suspect linked to the shooting had been taken into custody.

Initial reports indicate that the gunfire occurred outside the main ballroom, near the magnetometer screening point, with at least one law enforcement officer struck but protected by body armour.

No injuries were reported among the president or other senior officials.

In a post on his social media platform, President Trump praised the “quick and brave” actions of the Secret Service and other law enforcement agencies, confirming that the attacker had been apprehended and that key officials were safe.

The incident forced an abrupt halt to proceedings, with guests held under tight security as authorities worked to stabilise the situation.

Eyewitness accounts described confusion and fear inside the hall as details of the threat remained unclear.

Investigations are ongoing, with officials yet to disclose the motive behind the attack.

Authorities have assured the public that the situation is under control, even as questions remain about how the suspect was able to approach a heavily secured event of national significance.
