The media and civic community in Nigeria has been thrown into mourning following the death of respected journalist and former National Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Pa Jola Ogunlusi. He passed away peacefully today, at exactly 9:54 a.m., during a brief illness. He was aged 91.
Fondly known as “Papa Jola,” the late Ogunlusi was celebrated for his unwavering dedication to journalism, community service, and humanity at large. Rising to prominence in the 1970s as a vibrant journalist, he eventually served as the National Secretary of NUJ, where he championed equity, justice, and fairness in the profession.
Beyond his contributions to journalism, Pa Ogunlusi left lasting footprints in community development. As the President of the FESTAC Town Residents Association, he played a pivotal role in the creation of the Amuwo Odofin Local Council Development Area (LCDA). He also served as Chairman of the Community Development Council in Amuwo Odofin, where his tireless advocacy for grassroots progress earned him deep respect.
“He was a kind, loving, and deeply committed man whose legacy of service and sincerity touched countless lives,” said Gbenga Aruleba, who signed the family’s official statement.
The family expressed gratitude for his long, impactful life and has requested prayers and support during this time of grief. Burial arrangements will be announced in due course.
