The United States is preparing to drastically reduce the number of its embassies and consulates in Africa that process visa applications.
The development is expected to make travel to America significantly more difficult and expensive for many Africans.
According to an internal State Department memo obtained by the Associated Press, the number of US diplomatic missions across Africa handling visa applications will be cut from nearly 50 to just 20 in the coming weeks as part of President Donald Trump’s broader immigration crackdown.
Under the plan, 20 embassies and consulates would serve as regional visa-processing hubs, while many other US missions across the continent would stop handling routine visa applications.
It is not yet clear whether the US Consulate in Lagos will be among those affected by the changes, particularly in light of ongoing visa restrictions on Nigerian applicants.
