The United States Embassy in Nigeria has assured the public that scheduled passport and visa services within the United States and at its Embassies and Consulates worldwide will continue, even as the U.S. government experiences a lapse in appropriations.

In a statement shared on its social media channels, the Embassy emphasised that these services will operate “as the situation permits,” signalling that availability could be limited depending on staffing and operational constraints caused by the funding gap.

The Embassy also noted that, during the funding lapse, its social media accounts will not be updated regularly except for urgent safety and security information.

Nigerians seeking the latest updates on services or operating status are encouraged to visit travel.state.gov.

U.S. government funding lapses, commonly known as shutdowns, occur when Congress fails to pass the federal budget by the start of the fiscal year.

During such periods, non-essential government operations are curtailed, while essential services, including passport and visa processing, often continue under limited capacity.

The Embassy urged applicants to plan ahead and remain aware that services may be delayed depending on how the situation evolves.
