A UPS cargo plane crashed shortly after takeoff at Louisville’s Muhammad Ali International Airport on Tuesday, igniting a massive fire and prompting authorities to warn residents to “stay away” from the scene.
The Louisville Metro Police Department described the site near Fern Valley and Grade Lane as an “active scene with fire and debris,” and urged the public to avoid the area.
The aircraft, UPS Flight 2976, was a McDonnell Douglas MD-11 carrying three crew members when it crashed about 5.15pm local time en route from Louisville to Honolulu.
Injuries have been reported, according to the Louisville Metro Police, though the number and severity remain unclear.
Authorities issued a “shelter-in-place” order initially for a five-mile radius around the airport, later extending it northward to the Ohio River.
The airfield has been closed and all flights suspended as rescuers battle the blaze.
Federal investigators from the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are now leading the probe into the cause of the crash.
