Unlatched Container Falls Off Lagos Bridge, Crushes Woman’s Leg

Rescue workers had to cut off the right foot of a woman in order to save her from bleeding to death after her leg was trapped under a container which fell from a truck on the Iyana Ipaja bridge in Lagos today.

NewsmakersNG learnt that the incident occurred at about 6.30 pm when many pedestrians were crossing the road that passes under the bridge at the ever busy Iyana Ipaja bus stop.

The area was reportedly thrown into momentary commotion as pedestrians scampered to avoid being crushed by the container.

The incident also caused a serious traffic jam in the area.

Director-General of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the incident.

He said the victim had been rescued and taken to the hospital.

“Upon arrival of LASEMA at the scene, it was discovered that a 40 feet container had fallen from the bridge at Iyana-Ipaja on an adult female passerby who unfortunately got trapped under the fallen container.

“She was subsequently, extricated from beneath the container by the agency’s rescue team and taken to the hospital by officials of Lagos State Ambulances Service (LASAMBUS) with a severed limb.

“Subsequently, rescue team recovered the container as well as the limb of the victim from under the container,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.
