Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has expelled a female student, identified as Goddy-Mbakwe Chimamaka Precious, after a widely condemned incident involving her alleged assault on a lecturer.

The incident, captured on video and shared online, has sparked significant public outrage and debate over student-lecturer relations in academic institutions.

The altercation reportedly began when the student was recording a video in a classroom or corridor, seemingly obstructing the lecturer’s path.

In the footage, the lecturer appears to tap her lightly on the back to alert her to move out of the way. This action appeared to annoy the student, who reportedly hissed and began speaking angrily at the lecturer.

Tensions escalated when the lecturer allegedly attempted to seize her phone, apparently to force her to delete the video in which he appeared.

Witnesses claim that during the struggle, the student became more aggressive, eventually slapping the lecturer. The situation worsened when, amid the commotion, the student allegedly bit the lecturer in a further act of aggression.

The university administration, upon reviewing the video and hearing accounts of the incident, condemned the student’s behaviour as gross misconduct and announced her immediate expulsion.

In their official statement, UNIZIK management described the act as unacceptable and emphasised that it violates the institution’s code of conduct.

The university reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a respectful and disciplined academic environment.

“Such acts of aggression, regardless of the circumstances, have no place in our institution,” the statement read.

The administration called on students to maintain decorum and show respect for faculty members, reiterating that the university has a zero-tolerance policy for violence or indiscipline.

The expulsion has drawn mixed reactions, with some supporting the institution’s stance to ensure discipline while others have called for a thorough investigation into the incident to determine the roles both parties played.
