A female lecturer of the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Ilorin, identified simply as Mrs Zakariyyah, who was beaten to coma by a 400 level student of the institution, is now in stable condition and recuperating.

The student, identified as Captain Walz, reportedly assaulted the lecturer in her office, on Thursday.

Media reports quoted the Director of Corporate Affairs of the institution, Kunle Akogun, as confirming the development today.

He said the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sulyman Age Abdulkareem, in company of the Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences, Professor Oladiji, the Director, University Health Services, Dr Odunola and a few other staff visited the victim and her family, this morning.

The Vice Chancellor reportedly described the incident as sad and unfortunate, assuring that justice would be done on the matter.

According to him, the Vice Chancellor also said the university would pay the victim’s medical bill, while reiterating his commitment to the welfare of all staff and law-abiding students of the institution.

The student, according to reports, had sought the help of the assaulted lecturer, who is his project supervisor, because he did not observe the compulsory Students Industrial Work Scheme (SIWES).

The student allegedly entered the lecturer’s office and started banging her table. He then moved closer to her and started slapping her.

The lecturer reportedly tried to escape but he kept pursuing her. She later ran into an office but the student broke the window and started punching her.

In an attempt to escape, the lecturer reportedly fell down and sustained a cut on the head, after which the student allegedly strangled her till she fell into a coma.

The student was later arrested by the security personnel of the university and handed over to the police.
