Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki, has suspended the Head of the Department of Industrial Physics, Professor Edmund Umahi, following allegations that he extorted money from students.
The decision was communicated in an internal memorandum dated January 16, 2026 and issued from the Office of the Vice-Chancellor.
According to the memo, the university received a formal complaint that students across the Faculties of Sciences, Agriculture and Natural Resources Management, as well as the Medical College, were instructed to pay N1,000 each for a physics quiz.
The memo stated that the class representative was directed to collect the money on behalf of Umahi without the approval of the university authorities.
The amount was later reportedly reduced to N500 per student, also without management authorisation.
University management described the action as a “clear case of extortion” and ordered the professor’s immediate suspension, with placement on half salary pending the outcome of a formal investigation.
As part of the directive, Umahi has been instructed to hand over all university property in his possession to the Dean of the Faculty of Sciences.
The memo further disclosed that the matter has been referred to the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee for appropriate action.
The suspension letter was signed by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Ike-Elechi Ogba, on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor.
