Ololade Adeyanju/

US President Donald Trump has tweeted in Persian, the language most commonly spoken in Iran, to express solidarity with Iranians who are demanding the immediate resignation of their Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Citizens today took to the streets of Tehran, the Iranian capital, demanding justice and accountability following the admission by the government that its military shot down an Ukrainian airliner killing the 176 passengers and crew.

After days of denial, Iranian authorities today admitted its military mistakenly shot down the Ukrainian airliner with many Iranian citizens.

The nationality of passengers and crew aboard the plane were given as 82 Iranians, 63 Canadians, 11 Ukranians, 10 people from Sweden, four from Afghanistan and three from the United Kingdom and Germany respectively.

Videos posted on Twitter showed hundreds of protesters chanting in front of Tehran’s AmirKabir University.

A Google translation of Trump’s tweet reads: “To the brave, long-suffering people of Iran: I’ve stood with you since the beginning of my Presidency, and my Administration will continue to stand with you. We are following your protests closely, and are inspired by your courage.”
