Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) advanced into the UEFA Champions League (UCL) semi-final despite losing to Bayern Munich in the second at the Parc des Princes in Paris this evening.
Although Eric Choupo-Moting scored the only goal on the night for Bayern Munich, the Parisians dumped the UCL champions out of this season’s competition on superior away goals following a 3-3 aggregate scoreline.
In an entertaining first half that had opportunities raining, PSG were more wasteful in front of goal with the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Julian Draxler, and Neymar Jr. all missing gilt-edged chances.
The Brazilian forward hit the post against Bayern’s high line that was cut open at every attack by the hosts.
Although the German side also had their moments, they took the lead against the run of play on 40 minutes through Choupo-Moting. The Cameroon striker, filling in for the injured Robert Lewandowski, headed home a loose ball after Kylor Navas had saved David Alaba’s shot.
After the interval, PSG slowed the tempo, still hoping to catch their visitors on the break, and Moise Kean was presented with such opportunity but the Italian youngster blazed high on 77 minutes. Mbappe also broke through moments later but his goal was ruled offside.
But as the clock ticked towards the end Bayern poured forward and PSG held on to avenge their defeat in last season’s final.
In the other game of the night, Chelsea lost 0-1 at home but secured qualification into the semi-finals of the UCL with a 2-1 aggregate win over Porto.
Mehdi Taremi, Porto’s Iran striker, scored an excellent overhead kick in the final seconds but the goal was not enough to save the Portuguese side from elimination.
