An Uber driver in Lagos has been arrested after allegedly disappearing with an iPhone 16 entrusted to him for delivery, in an incident that triggered a coordinated search involving security operatives.
The suspect, identified as Augustine Adimabua, reportedly picked up the high-value parcel in Egbeda for delivery to Ikeja on Saturday but cancelled the trip midway and became unreachable shortly afterwards.
The matter first gained public attention after a Lagos-based social media user, Ashake (@Molayoo), raised alarm on X, accusing the ride-hailing platform of employing individuals who could not be trusted with customers’ property.
In her initial post, she wrote: “@Uber one of your riders in Lagos, Nigeria picked up a package (an iPhone 16) from Egbeda to be delivered to Ikeja and he cancelled the ride midway and he’s been unreachable ever since!!!”
She added: “DO YOU GUYS EMPLOY THIEVES NOW @Uber ??? This is someone’s business fgs!!!! @Uber WE NEED THE PACKAGE!!!!!!!”
The post sparked widespread reactions online and intensified pressure on authorities and the platform to respond.
Days later, Ashake confirmed that the suspect had been apprehended and handed over to law enforcement agencies.
In a follow-up update, she wrote: “HE HAS BEEN CAUGHT and handed over to the right authorities. Thank to every single one of you that made this possible, esp @sepril23NG”
She also alleged that the stolen device, valued at over N1 million, was sold for about N400,000 before recovery efforts caught up with the suspect.
Security sources and online reports indicate that the driver was later traced to his residence, where he was arrested with the involvement of soldiers.
The operation reportedly caught his wife by surprise.
Investigations further suggest that authorities are also moving to detain the individual who allegedly purchased the device.
The suspect, who reportedly maintained a 4.85 rating on the platform over a three-year period, is said to have initially claimed the phone was stolen after he cancelled the trip.
Uber has yet to issue an official statement on the incident at the time of filing this report.
