United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, a key player in Africa’s financial landscape, has announced a leadership change with the appointment of Henrietta Ugboh as an Independent Non-Executive Director.
The appointment, approved by regulatory authorities including the Central Bank of Nigeria, further reinforces UBA’s commitment to strong corporate governance and strategic growth across Africa and internationally.
Commenting on the appointment, UBA’s Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu, highlighted Ugboh’s reputation for professional excellence, integrity, and leadership.
“Henrietta Ugboh brings a track record of professional success, integrity, and leadership, which will further strengthen the UBA Group Board, underlining once again the Group’s commitment to robust corporate governance,” Elumelu said.
Ugboh joins UBA’s board with over 30 years of experience, notably in roles with Citibank, where she honed her expertise in commercial banking, credit, and risk management. She holds degrees in Economics and Statistics from the University of Benin, an MBA from ESUT Business School, and has completed Harvard Business School’s Executive Management Program. Her extensive banking knowledge is further endorsed by her status as an Honorary Senior Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria and a Fellow of the Institute of Credit Administration (FICA).
In addition to welcoming Ugboh, UBA also announced the retirement of Mrs. Owanari Duke, who joined the board in 2012 and has served on numerous committees, including the Board Governance, Audit, Nomination & Remuneration, and Statutory Audit Committees.
Elumelu expressed the board’s gratitude for her dedication and contributions, stating, “UBA deeply appreciates Mrs. Duke’s distinguished leadership and commitment over the years.”
With a presence spanning 20 African countries and international offices in New York, London, Paris, and Dubai, UBA serves over 45 million customers worldwide. As the bank continues to drive growth through retail, corporate banking, cross-border payments, and trade finance, the addition of Ugboh is seen as a step forward in UBA’s ambitious pan-African and global strategy.
