Ghanaian police have foiled an attempt by two Nigerians to rob a couple as they were leaving a bank, in Accra, last week.
The suspects, identified as Ndubueze Odoemenam, 22, and Chiokoko Amade, 25, allegedly punctured the tyres of the couple’s vehicle, while they were in the banking hall.
After the couple had left the bank, the suspects trailed their vehicle with an unregistered motorbike, waiting for the time the vehicle would be forced to a stop.
According to the local Daily Graphic, the Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, Mrs Afia Tenge, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, said at about 11am, the couple came out of the banking hall after withdrawing some money.
She said the couple got into their car and drove off without knowing that the back tyres had been perforated with a nail which was stuck in a bathroom slipper.
After a few minutes of driving, the couple had a flat tyre and as soon as they came out of their vehicle to attend to the tyre, the Nigerians pounced on them.
The suspects forcibly opened the car, took the money, which was in a bag and sped off on the motorbike.
However, another motorcyclist, who was passing by and witnessed the incident, gave the suspects a chase.
When he caught up with them at the traffic intersection, the unnamed motorcyclist used his helmet to hit one of the suspects, who was riding the motorbike.
The impact sent both motorbikes and their riders crashing into an oncoming commercial vehicle, while the money was scattered on the road.
Ironically, passengers on the commercial vehicle were said to have mistaken the Good Samaritan for a robber, who was attacking the Nigerians and had attempted to beat him up.
However, the timely arrival of officers of the Rapid Deployment Force Unit of the Ghana Police Service, saved the situation.
The suspects, who sustained injuries on their faces and arms, were first taken to the Police Hospital for treatment before they were detained at a police station in the city.
