Tunji Bello: Sixty-Three Hearty Cheers

By Kola Johnson/

As Tunji Bello, the veteran journalist, lawyer, political scientist, brilliant writer, former newspaper columnist, ex-chairman of the editorial board at This Day Newspapers, former Executive Editor of National Concord, consummate Environmental Czar, and immediate past Commissioner of Environment and Water Resources, as well as Lagos-based APC chieftain, turns 63 today, his admirers and well-wishers across the nation, and indeed globally, celebrate his remarkable achievements and inspiring life journey.

Their euphoria is not driven by any luxurious indulgence, exotic properties, or vast financial empire. Rather, they celebrate an exemplary model of excellence and remarkable achievements, recognizing him as a foremost inspirational icon of our time.

Tunji Bello’s activist impulse found definitive formative expression during his time as an undergraduate at the University of Ibadan. His successful foray into student unionism saw him serve as vice-president, and it was during a pre-election campaign visit to Queen’s Hall that he met a beautiful student, who would later become his wife. That student is none other than Professor Ibiyemi Bello, the distinguished scientist and academician, currently serving as the Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU).

After graduation, Tunji Bello immediately opted for the challenging field of journalism, following in the footsteps of pioneers like Herbert Macaulay, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Obafemi Awolowo, and Earnest Ikoli, who used journalism as a vehicle for social reformation.

Tunji’s literary talent, cerebral endowments, self-confidence, natural charisma, and divine destiny soon propelled him to the chairmanship of the editorial board of This Day newspapers. During his journalistic odyssey, he not only contributed immensely to invigorating the editorial content of National Concord and This Day Newspaper but also dazzled readers with his incisive weekly columns.

When Tinubu, then the Governor of Lagos State, appointed him as Commissioner of Environment, many were skeptical. However, Tinubu saw in Tunji the qualities needed for the pivotal role, defying the conventional wisdom that favored technocrats for such a critical sector.

Tunji Bello’s innate genius and determination transformed Lagos from one of the dirtiest cities in the world into a cleaner, more environmentally conscious metropolis. His tenure redefined the environmental landscape, aligning with Tinubu’s vision of a mega city.

A rare breed with an astounding ability to learn and master new challenges, Tunji’s romance with politics, although relatively recent, has made him a grassroots gem in Mainland Local Government. His insatiable passion for the poor and unbridled desire to touch lives have earned him a ubiquitous presence and respect in virtually every household.

His role as a unifying and integrative force, coupled with his magnanimity, has drawn many into the fold, particularly through the Mainland Independent Group, a socio-political pressure group that he supports. His efforts have made significant contributions to APC’s electoral successes.

In the recently concluded general election, his pivotal role, particularly during the presidential phase, demonstrated his loyalty and commitment to his political leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. His efforts included hiring hundreds of independent mobilizers and conducting a frenetic door-to-door campaign, highlighting Tinubu’s virtues.

Ex-President Muhammadu Buhari applauded Tunji Bello for his exemplary patriotism and sense of excellence, acknowledging his contributions as an accomplished journalist, political scientist, lawyer, and public administrator. Professor Yemi Osibajo and Babatunde Raji Fashola also commended his invaluable contributions and dedication.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu described Tunji Bello as a major contributor to Lagos State’s success since 1999, particularly in environmental initiatives. Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in a heartfelt tribute, described him as the most accomplished civil servant of his generation and an indispensable factor in Lagos State’s socio-economic progress.

Alhaji Ibrahim Megida, his “twin brother” and Special Assistant on Politics, often expresses profound gratitude for Tunji Bello’s impact on his life, highlighting his humanitarian empathy and dedication to empowering others.

In sum, Tunji Bello exemplifies a life dedicated to excellence, public service, and humanitarianism. His contributions across various fields have left an indelible mark, and his legacy continues to inspire many.
