The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has warned Nigerians about the dangers of drinking bleach and other disinfectants to cure COVID-19, following remarks by US president, Donald Trump, which suggested injecting disinfectants could kill the virus.

While commenting on new government research into how the virus reacts to different temperatures, climates and surfaces during Thursday’s White House coronavirus taskforce briefing, Trump had suggested people could receive injections of disinfectant to cure the coronavirus.

The US president had observed, “And then I see the disinfectant, where it knocks it out in a minute. One minute! And is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside or almost a cleaning. Because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs. So it would be interesting to check that. So, that, you’re going to have to use medical doctors with. But it sounds interesting to me.”

But the NCDC in a Twitter post warned that bleach and disinfectants should only be used to decontaminate surfaces and never considered as possible cure for COVID-19.

The post however made no reference to the statement by the US president.

The agency tweeted, “It is important to note that bleach & other disinfectants should be used to clean surfaces. They should NOT be consumed by people to treat #COVID19

“Drinking bleach & disinfectants can lead to health complications & even death

“Please share widely!”

Medical experts in the US were also quick to discredit Trump’s suggestions and warned that injecting disinfectant into people could be fatal.
