President Donald Trump has launched a fresh attack on CNN, accusing the broadcaster of promoting what he described as a “fraudulent” report linked to a “fake news site” in Nigeria, following its coverage of a statement issued by Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.
The controversy began after CNN aired the full statement from Iranian authorities claiming they had achieved a “great victory” and compelled the United States to accept a 10-point plan.
The network maintained that its report was based on official Iranian sources and corroborated by multiple state media outlets.
In a strongly worded post on his Truth Social platform, Trump dismissed the report outright.
“The alleged Statement put out by CNN World News is a FRAUD, as CNN well knows,” he wrote. “The false Statement was linked to a Fake News site (from Nigeria) and, of course, immediately picked up by CNN, and blared out as a ‘legitimate’ headline.”
Trump insisted that a different version of the Iranian position had since emerged.
“The Official Statement by Iran was just released, and posted on TRUTH, below,” he added, without clarifying the discrepancy between the versions.
Escalating his criticism, the US President suggested possible legal consequences.
“Authorities are looking to determine whether or not a crime was committed on the issuance of the Fake CNN World Statement, or was it a sick rogue player?” he said.
He further demanded an immediate retraction from the network.
“CNN is being ordered to immediately withdraw this Statement with full apologies for their, as usual, terrible ‘reporting,’” Trump wrote, adding that “results of the investigation will be announced in the near future.”
Notably, Trump did not identify the alleged Nigerian source he accused of originating the disputed report, referring only to “a Fake News site (from Nigeria).”
No such outlet has been publicly named, and there is no independent confirmation of the claim.
CNN, however, has stood by its reporting, stating that the Iranian statement it broadcast was sourced directly from officials and aligned with content distributed by Iranian state media channels.
The network has not issued any retraction as of the time of reporting.
The dispute adds to longstanding tensions between Trump and CNN, with the President repeatedly accusing the network of biased and inaccurate reporting.
