The Director General of the Delta State Orientation and Communications Bureau, Dr. Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, has highlighted the significant transformation of the tourism sector under the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
According to him, the state is witnessing an influx of resorts and luxury hotels, which are enhancing its appeal as a top tourist destination.
Dr. Oghenesivbe made these remarks in Asaba during a courtesy visit from Ambassador Huxley Adiniebo Unumadu, the Senior Special Assistant on Culture and Tourism Development to the Governor. He noted that both local and international tourists are increasingly visiting Delta State to enjoy vacations and explore its numerous tourist attractions, with many expressing interest in investing in the sector.
He listed some key attractions in Delta State, including the renowned Araya Bible Site, located in Isoko South Local Government Area. This site, featuring the Pool of Bethesda and a prayer altar, has become a pilgrimage destination for Christians. Other notable sites include the Mount Ned Nwoko Resorts, the Ibru International Ecumenical Centre, and historical locations such as the Mungo Park House in Asaba.
According to Dr. Oghenesivbe, Delta State’s tourism appeal is further enhanced by its peaceful environment, robust security, and ongoing infrastructure development under Governor Oborevwori. These factors are positioning the state as a premier destination for both domestic and international tourists.
Highlighting the spiritual significance of the Araya Bible Site, Dr. Oghenesivbe recounted the miraculous appearance of a Holy Bible at the site in 1942, which has since attracted pilgrims from around the world. The site, known for its “Prayer Altar” and the healing waters of the “Pool of Bathsheba,” has become a revered location for Christian worship and spiritual growth in Nigeria.
Dr. Oghenesivbe assured that the State Orientation and Communications Bureau will continue to promote the Araya Bible Site and other tourist attractions locally and internationally. He emphasized that the upcoming “Delta is Beautiful” campaign will showcase the state’s tourism potential, creating jobs, generating revenue, and attracting significant investments.
“Tourism plays a crucial role in the socioeconomic development of Delta State, offering spiritual, physical, and mental rejuvenation for our people and visitors alike,” Dr. Oghenesivbe stated. “The development of tourist sites is a key component of Governor Oborevwori’s MORE agenda, aimed at advancing Delta beyond 2027.”
He further expressed the Bureau’s readiness to collaborate with Ambassador Unumadu’s office in driving the “Delta is Beautiful” campaign to success.
“Tourism is a lucrative industry worldwide, and Delta will be no exception. We are committed to ensuring that our state becomes a top choice for tourists and holidaymakers,” he added.
Ambassador Unumadu, in his remarks, outlined the objectives of the “Delta is Beautiful” campaign, which aims to highlight Delta State’s rich cultural and tourism heritage. The campaign will feature print and visual content showcasing the state’s diverse attractions, with the goal of positioning Delta as a key player on the global tourism stage.
Unumadu called for the active participation of local government councils and stakeholders in this initiative, recommending the establishment of Tourism Committees to guide visitors and promote local attractions.
The visit concluded with Dr. Oghenesivbe being honored as one of the project partners for the “Delta is Beautiful” campaign. He was also presented with copies of “Discover Delta” and “Christmas in Delta” by Ambassador Unumadu.
