President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to his predecessor, former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away earlier today at a hospital in the United Kingdom.
In a statement released this evening, President Tinubu described the late Buhari as “a patriot to the core,” whose life was defined by duty, discipline, and deep commitment to Nigeria’s unity and progress.
“It is with profound sorrow and a heavy heart that I received the news of the passing of His Excellency, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd), GCFR,” Tinubu stated. “President Buhari was, to the very core, a patriot, a soldier, a statesman. His legacy of service and sacrifice endures.”
Buhari, 81, served Nigeria as Head of State from 1984 to 1985, and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023. Tinubu praised his unwavering dedication to public service and described his leadership style as one rooted in quiet strength, profound integrity, and a selfless devotion to the nation.
“He championed discipline in public service, confronted corruption head-on, and placed the country above personal interest at every turn,” the President stated.
As a mark of honour, President Tinubu has directed that all national flags be flown at half-staff for seven days beginning today. He also announced that the Federal Government will accord the former president full state honours.
In addition, an emergency session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) will be convened on Tuesday, dedicated solely to the memory of the late leader.
“I extend my deepest condolences to his beloved wife, Aisha, with whom I have been in constant touch, his children, the entire Buhari family, and all who knew and loved him,” Tinubu added.
He also expressed sympathy to the government and people of Katsina State, particularly the Daura Emirate where Buhari hailed from.
“May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus,” Tinubu stated. “And may his life continue to inspire generations of Nigerians to serve with courage, conviction, and selflessness.”
