President Bola Tinubu has formally written to the Senate, requesting the screening and confirmation of 15 nominees to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) board, in a move aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s human rights protection architecture.
The request, read on the floor by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, seeks the reconstitution of the commission’s governing board in accordance with statutory provisions.
The nominees cut across diverse professional backgrounds, particularly the media and legal sectors. Prominent among them is President of the Nigeria Guild of Editors and Editor of Vanguard Newspapers, Eze Anaba. Also listed is Dr. Salamatu Hussaina Suleiman, nominated as chairperson of the board, while Dr. Anthony Ojukwu (SAN) is to continue as Executive Secretary.
Other nominees include Roseline Tasha; Ambassador Adam Yubak Baku; ACG Felix Lawrence; Edmund Chinonye; Chinonye Obiaku (SAN); Oluwakemi Asiwaju Okere-Odo; Professor Adedeji Ogunji; Kingsley Chidozie; Mohammed Adelodu; Maupe Ogun Yusuf; Otunba Francis Meshioye; as well as Patience Patrick and Hawwa Ibrahim, all proposed as members.
President Tinubu stated that the nominations were made pursuant to Section 2(3) of the National Human Rights Commission (Establishment) Act, 2010, which empowers the President to constitute the board subject to Senate confirmation. He noted that the reconstitution is necessary to strengthen the commission’s institutional capacity and enhance its ability to effectively promote and protect human rights nationwide.
Following the presentation, the Senate referred the nominees to its Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters for screening, with a mandate to report back within two weeks.
If confirmed, the reconstituted board is expected to play a pivotal role in reinforcing the NHRC’s oversight functions, especially amid growing national concerns over accountability and the protection of fundamental rights.
