President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has dissolved the Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, and removed its newly appointed Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Bernard Odoh, along with the Registrar, Mrs. Rosemary Nwokike.
This decision follows allegations of irregularities in the appointment process of the Vice-Chancellor.
A statement issued today by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, revealed that the council, led by Ambassador Greg Ozumba Mbadiwe, was also sacked. Other members affected include Hafiz Oladejo, Augustine Onyedebelu, Engr. Amioleran Osahon, and Rtd. Gen. Funsho Oyeneyin.
The Federal Government accused the council of appointing an unqualified Vice-Chancellor without adhering to established procedures, sparking tensions between the university’s Senate and the governing council.
The decision to intervene was aimed at restoring adherence to the institution’s laws and maintaining academic stability.
In a similar move, President Tinubu also removed Engr. Ohieku Salami as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, Benue State.
Salami was accused of unlawfully suspending the institution’s Vice-Chancellor and ignoring directives from the Federal Ministry of Education to reverse the action.
His alleged use of abusive and threatening language towards Ministry officials further escalated the matter.
The Presidency reiterated that university councils must ensure smooth operations in line with their governing laws and warned against actions that could disrupt academic and administrative stability.
President Tinubu emphasised that his administration remains committed to improving Nigeria’s education standards and will not tolerate distractions in achieving this goal.
