President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has written a tribute to former Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, on the occasion of his 60th birthday, praising his lifelong commitment to democracy, governance, and nation-building.
In a statement issued by the Presidency, Tinubu reminisced on their shared history in the pro-democracy movement of the 1990s, when they both stood against military dictatorship. He highlighted Fayemi’s key role in the struggle for the actualization of the June 12, 1993 election mandate and the fight against the oppressive regime of General Sani Abacha.
“Kayode’s brilliance, commitment, and strategic skills were invaluable to our cause. During the harsh years of Abacha’s dictatorship, he played a pivotal role in establishing Radio Kudirat, which served as a voice for the pro-democracy movement,” Tinubu recalled.
The President also acknowledged Fayemi’s contributions beyond activism, commending his transition into governance, first as the founder of the Centre for Democracy and Development and later as a two-term governor of Ekiti State.
Tinubu praised Fayemi’s resilience in reclaiming his 2007 governorship mandate through a protracted legal battle and his instrumental role in the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which ended the dominance of the then-ruling party in 2015.
Describing Fayemi as “an invaluable ally, a committed patriot, and an able lieutenant,” Tinubu reflected on their recent political engagements, particularly during the 2023 APC presidential primaries, where Fayemi stepped down in support of his candidacy.
“His decision demonstrated remarkable humility and comradeship,” Tinubu said, reaffirming his deep respect for Fayemi’s leadership and sacrifices.
As Fayemi turns 60, Tinubu wished him continued health, success, and fulfillment in the years ahead.
