In the aftermath of the stampede at a children’s funfair in Ibadan, Oyo State, that claimed the lives of at least 35 people, including many children, both President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, have expressed profound sorrow and extended their condolences to the grieving families.

The tragedy, which unfolded on Wednesday at the Islamic High School, Basorun, was organized by Wings Foundation, a nonprofit led by Naomi Silekunola, the former queen of Ife. The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Silekunola and seven others in connection with the incident.

Speaking through his spokesperson, Moses Olafare, the Ooni of Ife described the incident as a heartbreaking loss for all, urging the families of the victims to find strength in this trying time.

“We share in the grief and pain that have engulfed the affected families. We pray that Olodumare grants them fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” the monarch stated.

Highlighting the philanthropic contributions of his former queen, the Ooni commended Silekunola’s passion for children’s welfare, recalling her numerous initiatives in Ile-Ife aimed at supporting indigent children.

“While at the Ile Oodua, she demonstrated unmatched love and care for children through similar programs, executed with utmost dedication,” he stated.

The Ooni also condemned the sensationalization of the tragedy by some bloggers and urged the media to uphold journalistic ethics during such sensitive times.

“Let us honor the memories of the departed by fostering a culture of care, respect, and accountability,” he added.

Calling for immediate reforms, the Ooni stressed the need for stringent safety protocols at public events, particularly those involving children, and pledged support for initiatives aimed at bringing solace to the affected families.

President Tinubu joined in mourning the victims, describing the incident as a national tragedy.

In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President extended what he described as his deepest condolences to the Government and people of Oyo State.

“The loss of innocent children is a tragedy that weighs heavily on our hearts. We pray for the souls of the departed and for peace and comfort for the grieving families,” Tinubu stated.

In response to the incident, the President directed relevant authorities to launch a comprehensive investigation into the causes of the tragedy, with a focus on uncovering potential negligence or deliberate actions. He also tasked the Oyo State Government with implementing measures to prevent future occurrences, including:

A thorough review of safety protocols for public events.

Strict enforcement of safety regulations.

Regular audits of event venues to ensure compliance with established standards.

Tinubu further called on event organizers nationwide to prioritize safety by integrating professional security and logistics into their planning processes.

“Our children’s safety must remain paramount. No event is worth compromising their lives,” the President added.
