President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mourned the sudden death of veteran journalist and Publisher of The Eagle Online, Dotun Oladipo, describing his passing at the age of 56 as a painful loss to Nigeria’s media industry and the nation.
In a condolence message issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President paid tribute to Oladipo’s decades of service to journalism, particularly his contributions to political reporting and the development of digital media in Nigeria.
Tinubu said Oladipo’s career exemplified the critical role of journalism in strengthening democracy through credible information, public accountability and robust national discourse.
“Dotun Oladipo’s death at the age of 56 is a painful loss to the Nigerian media community and to our nation,” the President said.
“He was a committed journalist who devoted significant years of his life to informing the public and contributing to the development of our democracy.”
Oladipo, a former Political Editor of The Punch, built a distinguished career in mainstream journalism before establishing The Eagle Online, where he became part of the generation of experienced Nigerian journalists who embraced digital publishing as the media landscape evolved.
Tinubu acknowledged that transition and Oladipo’s commitment to providing Nigerians with credible information across both traditional and digital platforms.
“His contributions to political journalism and the digital media space will not be forgotten,” the President said.
The President also extended his condolences to Oladipo’s family, friends, professional colleagues and members of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), where the deceased played a prominent role.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues in GOCOP and friends. I pray that Almighty God will grant him eternal rest and give his loved ones the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” Tinubu said.
Oladipo’s sudden death on Tuesday sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s journalism community, with colleagues and associates mourning a journalist whose professional journey spanned the traditional newspaper era and the rapid emergence of independent online publishing.
His death leaves another significant void in Nigeria’s media fraternity, where he had established himself not only as a journalist and editor but also as an advocate for the growth and credibility of professional online journalism.
