President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will leave Abuja on Sunday for Europe to begin a three-week vacation, temporarily stepping away from the country as political activities gather momentum ahead of the January 2027 election.
The Presidency announced the trip in a terse statement issued on Sunday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, the vacation forms part of Tinubu’s annual leave and will also serve as a working break.
London, United Kingdom, will be the President’s first stop during the three-week European trip.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will depart Abuja today for Europe to begin a three-week vacation as part of his annual leave,” the statement said. “His first stop will be London, United Kingdom.”
While the Presidency did not disclose other countries the President is expected to visit during the vacation or details of his engagements while abroad, it indicated that Tinubu would remain engaged during what it described as a “working vacation.”
The timing of the trip is particularly significant as the President is expected to return to an increasingly intense political atmosphere ahead of the January 2027 election.
The State House said Tinubu would return to Nigeria at the end of the three-week break to plunge into what it described as the “hectic campaign” for the election.
“President Tinubu is expected to return home after the working vacation to join the hectic campaign for the January 2027 election,” Onanuga stated.
The announcement effectively signals a transition into a more demanding phase of political activity for the President, with the January poll now just months away.
Tinubu, who assumed office on May 29, 2023, is expected back in Nigeria in September following the completion of his annual leave.
