President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for smashing a powerful Nigerian-Mexican drug cartel and dismantling what authorities described as a sophisticated multi-million-dollar narcotics production network operating in the country.
The President praised the agency following Wednesday’s announcement by NDLEA Chairman, Mohammed Buba Marwa, that operatives had concluded a weeks-long intelligence-driven operation which led to the arrest of foreign nationals, local drug kingpins and several collaborators.
According to the NDLEA, the operation also resulted in the seizure of chemicals and illicit substances valued at more than $360 million.
In a statement issued by Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described the operation as a major breakthrough in Nigeria’s war against organised crime and narcotics trafficking.
“This successful operation demonstrates exceptional professionalism, courage and unwavering commitment to safeguarding society from the devastating effects of narcotics,” the President stated.
Tinubu applauded the bravery and resilience of NDLEA operatives, urging them not to relent in the battle against drug trafficking networks threatening national security and the future of Nigerian youths.
The President warned that West Africa has increasingly become a strategic transit hub for international drug cartels moving cocaine, synthetic narcotics and unregulated pharmaceuticals to Europe and North America.
“Drugs not only pose a critical security threat for our region, but they also pose a grave danger to the future of our youth, some of whom have become victims of the trade,” Tinubu said.
He called on Nigerians to support security agencies by remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious activities within their communities.
Describing the crackdown as a strong warning to criminal networks, Tinubu declared that Nigeria would not tolerate organised crime anywhere within its borders.
“This landmark success is a strong message that our security agencies will not tolerate organised crime and criminality anywhere in the country, and that those who threaten public safety and national security will face the wrath of the law,” the President added.
