President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday night departed Yokohama, Japan, for Brazil, where he will begin a state visit on Sunday, August 24, as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s global partnerships.
The President is making the ultra-long-haul journey with a stopover in Los Angeles before proceeding to Brasilia, the Brazilian capital.
Tinubu had earlier embarked on his two-nation tour on August 15, departing Abuja for Dubai before arriving in Yokohama on August 18. While in Japan, he attended the opening ceremony and plenary of the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), held bilateral meetings with world leaders, and rounded off his visit with an interactive session with Nigerians in the diaspora.
The Brazil leg of the visit is expected to focus on expanding trade, investment, and cultural ties between the two largest economies on their respective continents. Diplomatic sources indicate that energy cooperation, agricultural technology exchange, and infrastructure financing will be at the heart of discussions.
Nigeria and Brazil already share strong historical and cultural links, with Brazil home to the largest population of people of African descent outside Africa. Tinubu’s visit is therefore seen as an opportunity to translate those ties into stronger economic partnerships and political collaboration.
The state visit marks another step in Tinubu’s ongoing efforts to reposition Nigeria as a key player in global affairs. By engaging both Asia and South America in one trip, the President signals his administration’s determination to build bridges across regions and attract strategic partnerships to drive Nigeria’s development agenda.
