Segun Atanda/

In a move aimed at bolstering consumer protection and competition oversight in Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu has appointed Mr. Olatunji Bello as the new Chief Executive Officer/Executive Vice-Chairman of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC).

The appointment, pending Senate confirmation, marks a significant milestone in the Commission’s mission to safeguard consumer rights and ensure fair market practices across the country.

Bello brings a wealth of experience to the role, having distinguished himself as a lawyer, administrator, and acclaimed journalist. His career spans decades, starting in journalism at Concord Newspapers in 1985, where he rose to prominent editorial roles including Group Political Editor and Editor of National Concord. His journalistic prowess earned him the prestigious US Alfred Friendly Press Fellowship and later led him to chair the Editorial Board of THISDAY Newspapers.

Beyond journalism, Bello has held pivotal governmental positions, notably as the former Secretary to the Lagos State Government and Commissioner for Environment, demonstrating a robust commitment to public service and governance.

President Tinubu expressed confidence in Bello’s ability to lead the FCCPC effectively, emphasizing the importance of upholding consumer rights and ensuring the quality and safety of goods and services in Nigeria. The President’s Special Adviser on Media & Publicity, Chief Ajuri Ngelale, underscored the strategic significance of the appointment, highlighting Bello’s mandate to advance the Commission’s objectives comprehensively.

The FCCPC plays a crucial role in regulating competition, preventing monopolistic practices, and safeguarding consumers from exploitation. Bello’s appointment is expected to invigorate these efforts, aligning with the government’s commitment to fostering a fair and competitive economic environment that benefits all Nigerians.

As Bello prepares to assume his new responsibilities pending Senate confirmation, stakeholders across sectors are optimistic about his leadership and the potential positive impact on consumer rights and market dynamics nationwide.

With Bello’s background in law, journalism, and governance, coupled with his extensive experience in public service and media, the stage is set for the FCCPC to enter a new era of effectiveness under his stewardship. His appointment reflects Tinubu’s vision for proactive consumer protection and vibrant economic competition in Nigeria.
