President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed retired Major General Adeyinka A. Fadewa as Special Adviser on Homeland Security, in a move aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s internal security coordination and intelligence-driven response to emerging threats.

The appointment, announced today in a statement issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), reflects the administration’s renewed push to deepen inter-agency collaboration and improve national security architecture amid growing security challenges across the country.

According to the statement signed by the Head of Information and Public Relations in the SGF’s office, Chris Ugwuegbulam, President Tinubu approved the appointment in recognition of Fadewa’s “exceptional record of service, strategic expertise, and outstanding contributions to Nigeria’s national security architecture.”

A circular conveying the appointment was signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, and issued through the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana.

Fadewa, a highly decorated retired Major General, brings more than three decades of military and intelligence experience spanning counter-terrorism operations, intelligence coordination, national security strategy, and international security diplomacy.

One of the defining moments of his career came during his tenure as Principal General Staff Officer to the National Security Adviser between 2015 and 2021, where he reportedly played a central role in shaping Nigeria’s modern intelligence coordination system.

The statement noted that he spearheaded the establishment of the Intelligence Fusion Centre at the Office of the National Security Adviser, creating a multi-agency intelligence-sharing platform involving the Defence Intelligence Agency, National Intelligence Agency, Department of State Services, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Armed Forces.

Government officials believe the platform significantly improved national threat assessment and strategic response coordination among security agencies.

Following his retirement from active military service, Fadewa served as Senior Research Fellow at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Abuja, where he focused on policing reforms, civil-security cooperation, and broader national security policy issues.
He is also credited with authoring the monograph, Policing and National Security in Nigeria, described in the statement as a practical framework for strengthening collaboration between civil institutions and security agencies.

President Tinubu expressed confidence that the retired General’s appointment would further boost the administration’s efforts to build a safer Nigeria through improved homeland security coordination, intelligence integration, and proactive risk management.

The President also urged Fadewa to deploy his experience, professionalism, and strategic insight in advancing the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda through enhanced national security management.
