The lead maintained for weeks by Nigeria’s Fela Anikulapo Kuti in the top five Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Race is being threatened by rival American-Swiss singer known as the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Tina Turner.
In less than 24 hours into the race on February 12, the late Nigerian Afrobeat King leapt from the bottom to sit atop 15 other iconic musicians competing for a place in the top five of the 2021 Rock Hall of Fame.
But as votes from Fela’s fans reaches 240, 258 to still keep him in the lead, Tina Turner is running closely behind with 235,337. The gap between the leading stars stands at 4,921.
Before his supersonic shot into the lead, Fela was at the bottom of the ladder with 2240 votes while Tina Turner was leading with 21,883 votes.
Presently, the top five stars among the 16 contestants are Fela Kuti, Tina Turner, Foo Fighters (171, 093), Iron Maiden (165, 640), and The Go-Go’s (158,965).
Other contestants as they stand in the race from the sixth position are Carole King, Todd Rundgren, Devo, Dionne Warwick, Race against the Machine, Chaka Khan, Kate Bush, Mary J. Blige, New York Dolls, LL Cool J, and Jay-Z.
The top five artists, as selected by the public will comprise a “fans ballot” that will be tallied along with the other ballots to choose the 2021 inductees.
Fans were requested to visit vote.rockhall.com to cast a ballot daily. They must log in to vote, and voting is capped at one ballot per day.
A message on the voting site, https://vote.rockhall.com/ says: “Your vote, your voice. It’s time for you to support your favorite Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2021 Nominees and help them reach the top 5 of the official Fan’s Ballot. You can select up to 5 Nominees daily and submit your vote. Share your ballot, spread the word and rock the vote now until April 30!”
