The police in Katsina State have debunked a newspaper report that armed robbers stormed Kankara grain market and killed 10 citizens.

According to the state police spokesman, Mr Isah Gambo, the bandits killed two women and a child in a road attack, but they didn’t go to the grain market.

He says in a statement sent to NewsmakersNG today: “What really happened was that, on 18/11/2017 at about 20:00hrs, a group of armed robbers suspected to be herdsmen, blocked the highway along Kankara – Faskari road, specifically at Biya village, Faskari LGA of Katsina State.  The hoodlums tried to stop a vehicle, Volkswagen Golf III, white in colour, with registration number NSR 421 EH, driven by one Abubakar Magaji ‘m’ aged 30yrs of Sheme town, Faskari LGA of Katsina State. However, the driver refused to stop and the hoodlums opened fire at the vehicle, which led to the death of two women and a child.  The Command wishes to state that, at no point in time did the hoodlums attack the Kankara grain market neither did they rob any person of his belongings.  It is not true that ten persons were killed by the robbers and several injured.

“The Command wishes to inform the general public that the Commissioner of Police, Katsina State Command, CP BD Gwana psc + visited the scene of the incident and condoled with the families of the two deceased women and the infant. However, he has directed comprehensive investigation into the incident and the arrest of the hoodlums. Also, a team of police mobile patrol teams and SARS were deployed to the area as reinforcement by the Commissioner of Police.”
