A young legal scholar, Maryam Lawal, has distinguished herself at the Nigerian Law School, emerging as the Best Female Student and Second Best Overall Graduate in a cohort of 7,134 students.
Lawal, who shared her achievement in a post on X (formerly Twitter), was also honoured with eight academic awards, including the prize for Best Student in Corporate Law Practice.
Her journey began in January 2024, when she received the Reginald Aziza Leadership in Law Scholarship, a prestigious award that supports outstanding students pursuing legal education. In her post, Lawal described the experience at the Law School as “rigorous,” marked by “long study hours, self-doubt, fatigue, and mental exhaustion,” but ultimately defined by “resilience, growth, and purpose.”
“I am thankful to God for this milestone,” she stated. “As I step into this next chapter, I am filled with anticipation for the path ahead and the exploits that I will make in the legal profession, Allah’s willing.”

Though relatively unknown before now, her academic feat has drawn praise from legal professionals and young aspirants alike, who see her as a fresh symbol of excellence, especially among women in law.
The Nigerian Law School remains one of the most challenging academic institutions in the country, and Lawal’s success story underscores the grit and brilliance that many young Nigerians continue to demonstrate against the odds.
